“Show me the Money.” This well known movie quote of the late 1990’s is the standard by which we can effectively analyze the priorities of the United States federal government. Security, in a broad sense, has always been a staple of federal governance. However, by analyzing the 2012 U.S. Federal budget, we can see the specific agenda within that broad category. Simply put, what the United States views as highly important, the United States funds generously. The FY 2012 federal budget contains increased funding for certain components of the criminal justice system and decreased funding for others aspects.
The 2012 budget provides a 2 percent increase in Department of Justice appropriations above 2010 funding. This $28.2 billion dollars represents a strong commitment to federal law enforcement efforts. National security agencies, the FBI, correctional officers, and prosecution programs are set to receive a net increase in federal financial support.$3 billion of the newly appropriated funds has been allocated to federal litigation efforts, promising to protect civil rights, the environment, consumers, and intellectual property.
