Every year the Montevideo City Hall and DAECPU (Directores Asociados de Espectáculos Carnavalescos Populares del Uruguay - Associated Directors of Popular Carnival Shows of Uruguay) organize the Official Carnival Competition in the open theatre Teatro de Verano Ramón Collazo; located near the coastline. Carnival groups participate in the Opening Parade and then take turns to perform at the Teatro de Verano. Meanwhile, shows in the many popular theatres (tablados) and even traditional theatres keep the groups busy.
After the first round of the Carnival Competition, twelve groups have been eliminated and thirty-six remain. In the nine stages of the second round, eighteen murgas, four parodists, two revues, six humorists and six comparsas remain. At this stage the groups contend to reach a place among the prestigious and final third round known as the mini-league.
