Euroclear UK and Ireland (CREST)
CREST is the biggest trade settlement platform in the UK and Ireland. If you hold London listed securities through your bank you will already be holding shares through this system through a nominee account.
Nominee Accounts
Nominee accounts are accounts in the name of someone else, often your bank, held on your behalf. For example, you may hold 10 shares in British Airways PLC through your bank. This could even be part of your ISA or PEP. These shares may be held in the name of your bank, e.g., HSBC Global Nominees (UK) Limited. You are therefore not a named holder in British Airways PLC. They know that HSBC is holding shares, but they do not know those shares are held for you.
The nominee (bank) is the registered shareholder. The client (you) are the beneficial owner, sometimes also called the indirect owner, of the shares.
